About John Gernatt
Coastal South Georgia-based graphic artist creates, promotes, and sells products with a heavy emphasis on nautical themes. My appreciation for all things nautical began early in my life. I was born and grew up in Savannah, Georgia. Savannah is a port city. It has nearby beaches, marshes, rivers, and a comfortable climate. I boated, fished, crabbed, shrimped, and explored the Intracoastal waterway beginning in elementary school. I also learned how to build boats from experienced boat builders in my family. Experiencing Coastal Georgia in the mid-1960s exposed me to the beauty and natural habitat of the coast before its development and population growth. There is a mystical quality associated with maritime adventure. In my mind, I still smell the dark, gooey river mud at low tide. And on a warm day, I can still smell the black creosote on dock pilings used a half-century ago. I acquired professional photography skills through formal education in the early 1970s at North Georgia Technical College. From there, I used large format cameras to document research. While working in Athens, Georgia documenting research for the federal government, I attended and then graduated from the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia. Later, I transitioned from a business professional back into the arts field. I began using Illustrator and Photoshop to create websites. Now I am a full-time graphics artist and website developer. Life and events surrounding me continue to influence my art. First and foremost, I am fortunate to have been married 45+ years, and have a wonderful wife, daughter, and grandchildren. Love, family, and everyday life provide added inspiration for the products in my collections.
